Best High-End Box: NVIDIA Shield TV Pro
The Shield TV Pro remains the most powerful Android TV box available. It’s the right choice if you run a Plex server, want the best AI upscaling, or need the fastest performance money can buy.

Best for Most People: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max
At $59, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max delivers 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos with Wi-Fi 6E. It’s the easiest recommendation for most households, and it’s first in line for Amazon’s new Alexa+ AI features.

Best Budget Android TV Box: onn. 4K Pro
Walmart’s onn. 4K Pro is the box to buy if you want Android TV (Google TV) without paying Shield money. For about $49 you get Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Atmos plus the ports sticks leave out — Ethernet, a USB-A port for drives and adapters, and a backlit remote with a finder button. It’s slower than the Shield and can’t host a Plex server, but for streaming and light sideloading it’s the best value box we’ve tested.

Best for AI & Discovery: Google TV Streamer
The Google TV Streamer is the device leading Google’s rollout of Gemini — conversational search, rich visual answers, and content recommendations across all your services. With Ethernet, 4GB of RAM, and Matter/Thread built in, it’s the best all-round Google TV box.

Best for Apple Users: Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen)
If you use iPhone, AirPlay, and HomeKit, the Apple TV 4K is worth the premium — the cleanest interface of any streaming device. One caveat: a next-generation model with Apple Intelligence has been widely rumored, so if on-device AI matters to you, check our AI on TV guide before you buy.

Skip Unless You Only Use the Big Apps: Fire TV Stick 4K Select
Amazon’s cheapest 4K stick at $40, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, is the first to run the new Linux-based Vega OS. It’s snappy for mainstream streaming but drops Android — meaning no sideloading, a thinner app store, and no Dolby Vision. Fine as a basic appliance; the wrong choice for tinkerers.
Want an Android TV box specifically?
“Android TV box” covers two very different things. Name-brand boxes — the Shield, the onn. 4K Pro, and the Google TV Streamer above — run Google-certified Android TV / Google TV, get security updates, and play Netflix and Prime Video in 4K. Generic no-name boxes sold on marketplaces often run uncertified Android builds that can’t stream major apps in HD, rarely get updates, and sometimes ship with malware. We only recommend certified boxes: the onn. 4K Pro on a budget, the Google TV Streamer for the mainstream, and the Shield if you want power.
AI is the big 2026 story
The hardware race has slowed; the real change this year is software. Every platform is adding generative AI — Gemini on Google TV, Alexa+ on Fire TV, and Apple Intelligence on the next Apple TV. Most of it is early, but a few features (conversational search, scene-jumping, AI upscaling) are genuinely useful. We break down what works and what’s hype in our AI on your TV box guide.
